“The Role of Sprouty-1 in the Role of Reverse Modeling of a Failing Human Heart”
Nate Charles graduated in 2002 from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse with a double major in Chemistry and Biomedical Science and a minor in Mathematics. The following Fall, he entered the University of Minnesotas combined MD/PhD Medical Scientist Training Program. After completing his first two years of medical school, he has recently begun his thesis research in the Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology graduate program under the guidance of Dr. Jennifer Hall, Director of Cardiovascular Genomics in association with the Lillehei Heart Institute. His research uses paired human heart samples from ventricular assist device-treated patients to search for unique genetic markers of congestive heart failure and cardiac remodeling. He's currently developing a transgenic line of mice overexpressing the unique biological marker, Sprouty-1, identified from human gene expression profiling. A resident of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Nate is a diehard Green Bay Packers fan and can often be found sporting the green and gold during the football season!
