Undergraduate Research Opportunity Award
"Disease causing PTPN11 Mutations have Gain-of-Function Effects during Frog Embryogensis"
Mentor: Jamie Lohr, M.D.

Matthew is a University of Minnesota senior. He will be completing his degree in Genetics and Cell development in the coming year. After graduation he hopes to take part in AIDS relief work abroad before attending medical school.

Matthew is interested in the cardiac anomalies caused by the a gain of function mutation found in Noonan¿s syndrome (NS). A frog model system will be set up in which, injections of mRNA into Xenopus Laevis will be used to create over expression in the heart. The goal of this work is that the observed phenotype can then be used as an etiological explanation for heart defects found in NS.
