Assistant Professor
Department of Medicine, Vascular Biology Center/Cardiovascular Division
Dean's Faculty Recruit
Dr. Chen received his MD and MS degrees from Neimonggu Medical
College, and the National Research Institute of Sport Science (NRISS), respectively.
He worked as a neurosurgeon for two years and was then appointed Assistant
Professor and subsequently Associate Professor at NRISS studying overtraining-induced
cardiac and skeletal muscle injury. His work during that time was recognized
by scientists in this field, and in 1991 he was awarded an Honorable Mention
from the President of the International Olympic Committee for his research.
Dr. Chen subsequently obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, where
he also
pursued postdoctoral training under the mentorship of Professor R. J. Bache.
In 2002 he was awarded a Scientist Development Award from the American Heart
Association, and in 2002 awarded an RO1 grant from National Institutes of Health
(NIH). He was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine/Cardiology
Division
in 2003, and in 2005 became a member of the University of Minnesota Vascular
Biology Center. He has published over 30 peer reviewed journal articles
as first or corresponding author in areas of ventricular hypertrophy, congestive
heart failure and muscle injury.
The research in Dr. Chen¿s laboratory is directed toward understanding
molecular mechanisms responsible for the development of myocardial hypertrophy
and congestive heart failure, and discovery of new therapeutic approaches to
treating congestive heart failure. By using genetically modified mice in combination
with pharmacological agents, the current research activities in Dr. Chen¿s
laboratory are focused on effects of nitric oxide, oxidative stress, and
adenosine receptors in the development of congestive heart failure.
