For third year, U of M Cardiologist named AHA Heart Hero

(from University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview)
Minneapolis (August 3, 2010) -- The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association has named Gary Francis, MD, the winner of their Heart and Stroke Hero Award in the physician researcher category.

Gary Francis is the director of the heart failure program and associate director of Lillehei Clinical Trials Center and a cardiologist with University of Minnesota Physicians.

Dr. Francis was nominated by Dan Garry, MD, who wrote:

"No other faculty member within the Cardiovascular Division is more respected by his peer faculty members or trainees for his integrity and his commitment to education. He is generous with his time and efforts, supportive of fellows and faculty members at the University of Minnesota, and is an outstanding communicator sharing his sense of humor with trainees, colleagues, staff and patients. He lives and models a life of excellence—refusing to provide anything but the finest education, research and patient care at the University. Dr. Francis has transformed cardiovascular care for the state of Minnesota. He inspires those around him to make an impact in cardiovascular medicine."

Heart & Stroke Heroes will be recognized at two events: a patron party on September 1st and a gala on October 16th. Honorees will receive their official award on stage in front of more than 800 guests.

This is the 16th year the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association has held its award program, celebrating a physician, a health care provider and a survivor. A nominating committee, comprised of a diverse group representing the local health care systems and past honorees, selects the winners from community nominations.

This is the third year in a row that a University of Minnesota Cardiologist has won this award. In 2008 Robert Bache, MD was awarded the honor, and in 2009 Robert Wilson, MD.
