LHI Lecture
A genetic approach to unravel a new pathway increasing risk for type 2 diabetes: TCF7L2
Jennifer Hall, PhD
Associate Professor of Medicine
Director, Program in Translational Cardiovascular Genomics
Cardiovascular Division, University of Minnesota
MICaB Visiting Scientist, BROAD Institute of MIT and Harvard, Cambridge, MA

info about Jennifer Hall from the Cardiovascaulr Division web site
Summary:
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a complex disease resulting from the
interaction of multiple genetic and environmental factors. Common
genetic variants of the TCF7L2 gene have recently been identified as
the strongest genetic risk factors increasing risk of T2D. However, it
is unclear how these variants in non-coding regions of the gene
increase risk of the disease.

LHI Lecture
Stem cells, Feeding Energy Starved Myocardium: A New Hope For
A Broken Heart
Jianyi Zhang, PhD
Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Engineering
Director, NIH Funded Laboratory of Cardiac Energetics and Laboratory of Cellular Therapy for Cardiac Failure
Cardiovascular Division, University of Minnesota

info about Dr. Zhang from the Cardiology web site
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to discuss and explain the current understanding of myocardial bioenergetics at basal- and high-cardiac workstates of normal or failing hearts. They will also discuss the potential mechanisms of beneficial effects of cellular therapy for the injured heart. Participants will share their knowledge and interests in pursuing the novel applications in this emerging field of cellular therapy.
