Interested in seeing what Flexible MD students have done?
The Flexible MD program at the University of Minnesota Medical School gives medical students the opportunity to participate in experiences not available in the regular curriculum, that meet their individual needs and allow them to better serve communities and patients.
The program allows students to take a leave of absence from medical school and/or extend their graduation date, allowing them time to participate in the experience they choose. Through the Flexible MD program, students may take up to six years to complete their medical education and pay the same price to earn their MD.
In training the next generation of physicians, the University of Minnesota Medical School responds to the concerns of our communities and works to ensure our students excel in patient-focused care. The flexibility and creativity afforded by our Flexible MD program will improve students' ability to serve the needs of patients and communities.
How does it work?
Any currently enrolled medical student in good academic standing can participate in the program. Medical students seeking to take advantage of the Flexible MD will outline their plans to faculty and staff members of an educational enrichment committee. This committee then reviews each student's individual plans for their experience and offers guidance.
Types of academic experiences students may participate in:
- Community-based service learning
- Global health opportunities via the IMER program
- Advanced courses, certificate programs, or additional degrees
- Dual degree programs, excluding the MD/PhD program
