On the University of Minnesota Medical School, Duluth campus, 60 first-year medical students enter our doors each year eager to learn the science and art of medicine. Minnesota is the nation’s 12th largest state by area but ranks 21st in population. The state’s abundance of wilderness and sparsely populated areas means access to health care can be challenging for many.
In Duluth, we focus on educating doctors who will serve these rural communities. In fact, in 2010, the Medical School, Duluth campus, was named #1 in the country in percentage of MDs who practice in rural areas.
Working in smaller communities can be an exciting challenge on many levels. Our medical students understand and embrace that challenge from the first day.
After two years, you’ll have a variety of options for completing your medical education, including the Rural Physician Associate Program or clerkships in Duluth, Minneapolis, or St. Paul.
The Medical School’s Duluth campus is part of the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), with more than 11,500 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. You’ll enjoy the benefits of being part of a large and top-notch medical school, but all the personal attention a smaller school environment delivers. This proximity to faculty gives you ready and rapid access to teachers, researchers, and administrators.
Our smaller size also ensures early exposure to clinical experiences. With placement in a rural community, you’ll have enhanced access to hands-on patient care. Through community-based programs, you’ll get to know physicians from Duluth and rural Minnesota who come to our campus to teach and who open their offices so that you may work by their sides.
On the Duluth campus, daily life is simple so you can focus on learning. Getting to and from school is easy with good public transportation and little traffic congestion. At the school, parking is close and plentiful. And our fully connected campus means that you don’t have to go outside – traveling within the UMD campus in comfort.
