    The University of Minnesota Medical School offers the opportunity to tailor your medical education to meet your individual needs. You may take anywhere from 3½ to 6 years to complete your medical degree without paying higher tuition.

    Through Flexible MD, you’ll gain experiences that complement your medical degree. Your options include:

    Rural Physician
    Associate Program (RPAP)


    RPAP is available to 3rd and 4th year students. While participating, you’ll complete several clinical rotations while you live and train for 9 months under the supervision of a small-town family physician. As an RPAP student, you’ll get hands-on experience:

    RPAP is available to 3rd and 4th year students. While participating, you’ll complete several clinical rotations while you live and train for 9 months under the supervision of a small-town family physician. As an RPAP student, you’ll get hands-on experience:

    - See patients in clinic, hospital, emergency room, nursing homes, hospice, at home, and the community

    - Learn clinical medicine, procedures, community health, and the business of medicine

    - Experience the full spectrum of rural medical care as you follow patients and their families through a disease process or pregnancy

    - Are mentored on the personal and professional aspects of being a family physician in a rural community

    Communities around Minnesota with populations from 350 to 30,000 have been RPAP teaching sites. Practice locations vary from small family medicine clinics to large multi-specialty outpatient centers. Hospitals can range in size from 15 to 140 beds.

    International Medical
    Education & Research (IMER)


    If international health and medicine is your goal, this program will help you explore your opportunities. Whether you’re interested in an international education, research, or other scholarly experience, IMER will help you find a program and location that’s right for you.

    Our Medical School has affiliation agreements with 25 medical schools around the world, from Sweden's Karolinska Institute to Uganda's Makerere University.

    Medical Education through Diversity and Service (MEDS)


    As a student on our Duluth campus, you have the opportunity to participate in MEDS, or Medical Education through Diversity and Service. MEDS is an elective class which provides opportunities for you to experience health care in other cultures between your 1st and 2nd year in medical school.

    As a student on our Duluth campus, you have the opportunity to participate in MEDS, or Medical Education through Diversity and Service. MEDS is an elective class which provides opportunities for you to experience health care in other cultures between your 1st and 2nd year in medical school.

    Through MEDS, you can get involved in community service and medical relief organizations throughout the world. Cultural experiences in health care will not only strengthen your preparedness to serve an increasingly diverse population both at home and abroad,it will also benefit the people you care for.

    Former MEDS participants have traveled to Peru, Northern Tanzania, Cuba, the Marshall Islands, Mongolia, rural Alaska, Ghana, Uganda, Belize and many other international sites.
