Each year, hundreds of enthusiastic prospective medical students attend our information sessions, seminars, tours, and other activities designed to showcase the University of Minnesota Medical School experience.

Medical School pre-med information sessions

We host these monthly information sessions year-round. Current medical students share their experiences and Office of Admissions staff discuss a variety of topics, including:

• Available programs and educational opportunities
• Selection criteria used by the admissions committee to select applicants for admission to our medical school
• How to apply to medical school

Duluth campus rural pre-med summit

During this annual day-long workshop, the medical school application process is presented from the MCAT to AMCAS to interviewing. Faculty, physicians and medical students share the challenges and rewards of pursuing a career in rural family medicine. Participants have hands-on experiences related to obstetrics and delivery, FAST ultrasound, medical imaging, heart sounds, and anatomy/pathology.

The next Rural Pre-Med Summit is scheduled for Saturday, October 22, 2011, on the Duluth campus.

Empowering multicultural students for careers in medicine seminar series

Designed for minority and multicultural students, this Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity seminar series guides you through the many aspects of preparation for the Medical School admissions process. In September and October, the group meets weekly for 90 minutes. The timing of the meetings is designed to prepare you for the medical school application and admissions process that will take place throughout your senior year of college.

Center of American Indian and Minority Health (CAIMH) summer programs

The University of Minnesota offers a variety of opportunities and information sessions for pre-med students from American Indian or minority backgrounds.

• Pre-Admission Workshop: a program for college juniors, seniors, and recent graduates. This workshop addresses possible challenges faced by Native American students throughout the Medical School application process.
• Native Americans into Medicine (NAM): a program held at the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth campus for promising Native American undergraduate students who are pursuing a career in health or medicine. It informs and prepares you to be more competitive as you move toward your goals.
• High School Superstars Summer Program: a 6-week program held at the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth campus. Superstars helps high school students with a strong interest in health or biomedical science explore career opportunities.
