Becoming a doctor takes a lot of hard work and commitment. But there are a lot of enjoyable special events and rites of passage along the way. Through events with your fellow students - and some with faculty - the University of Minnesota hopes to expand your interests, skills and insights.

Many events are designed to help you meet and interact with your fellow students in a way that creates a team atmosphere. Others are designed to recognize students for their determination and to help keep you motivated throughout your medical education.

Upon entering medical school in the fall, you’ll embark on your first important rite of passage as you begin your medical education—the annual White Coat Ceremony.

Here, you’ll receive your first white coat – the traditional symbol of the doctor – to recognize your entry into the profession of medicine. The class then takes an oath recognizing the importance of professionalism and humantarianism in the doctor-patient relationship.

The ceremony is an important and meaningful tradition in which Medical School faculty welcome 1st-year students as junior colleagues dedicated to patient care.

    Match Day

Sometimes referred to as “medicine’s March madness,” Match Day is a rite of passage on every medical school campus.

Sometimes referred to as “medicine’s March madness,” Match Day is a rite of passage on every medical school campus.

In March of your 4th year of medical school, you’ll anxiously gather with your colleagues – perhaps with family in tow – to simultaneously open small white envelopes.

The contents – which reveal which residency program has accepted you – tells you where you’ll begin your career as doctors and complete your residency training.

This Match Day ritual takes place at the same time on the same day for all graduating medical students around the country.
