Regions Internal Medicine Training Program

MEDDOM MEDRES Photos Regions Hospital Aerial JPG Welcome to Regions!

Thank you for considering Postgraduate Training in Internal Medicine at Regions Hospital through the University of Minnesota’s Internal Medicine Residency Program. The residency program is vital to our mission in the Department of Medicine. We take pride in the exceptional quality and dedication of our graduates once they begin their own practices, whether that’s in general internal medicine or a subspecialty.

Regions Hospital has an illustrious history dating back over 125 years. It was first known an Ancher Hospital, then St. Paul and Ramsey County Hospital and in the mid-1990s established itself as Regions Hospital. It is a Level I adult and pediatric trauma center and has a renowned Burn Center. These attributes allow residents to care for both common and rare diseases, providing a wealth of educational opportunities and experiences.

Regions recently underwent a $179 million expansion and the new South Tower opened for inpatient care in October 2009. This state of the art tower includes all private patient rooms, a new emergency department, multi-media technology and comfortable family and provider surroundings. Regions is excited to provide our patients with not only excellent care but a peaceful stay as well.

Regions Hospital greatly values the Housestaff and invests much time, effort and resources to provide an atmosphere that fosters learning. Ask our current residents about their experiences and you will hear of the camaraderie and support you feel while at Regions. Our attending physicians are excellent and serve as role models and mentors with many long-standing relationships developing over the course of training. We try to maximize interactive learning opportunities and minimize the stress and tasks not contributing to training.

Regions Hospital has thriving hospitalist program, one of the largest in the nation. The program has won the most National Society of Hospital Medicine awards in the nation. Most ward teams are staffed by the experienced Hospitalist group. Regions Hospital and the hospitalist program serve as the main site for the Hospitalist Pathway through the University of Minnesota Internal Medicine Residency. Regions has a full complement of subspecialty services available and through which residents rotate, such as pulmonary and critical care, cardiology, nephrology, infectious disease, hematology/oncology, gastroenterology and palliative care as well as surgical subspecialties Additionally, our attending physicians are not only teachers but continue to be involved in research as well. Many of the physicians are involved in basic science, clinical and quality improvement research which benefits both our residents and patients.

We hope you will consider the University of Minnesota Internal Medicine Program. Regions Hospital is proud to be a part of the training of new physicians. Our staff has an abundance of experience and knowledge, not to mention enthusiasm, to share with our Internal Medicine Residents.
