Our Training Sites

Our residents rotate at six Twin Cities hospitals; some are private and community-based, while we also utilize our University-based research hospitals. Each site is dedicated to resident education, and two of our sites are listed in the 2004 USNews & World Report’s rankings of the top U.S. hospitals:
University of Minnesota Medical Center, a division of Fairview
Hennepin County Medical Center

Another advantage of our program is the patient population. There are over 3 million people in Twin Cities metro area. Residents care for urban and rural patients, as well as diverse international populations.

Integrated Institutions

University of Minnesota Medical Center, a division of Fairview, http://www.fairview-university.fairview.org has two hospitals, University and Riverside, which provide the core teaching for Benign Gynecology and Mature Women’s Health, Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Reproductive Endocrinology with approximately 4,600 gynecologic oncology visits and 300 surgeries for invasive gynecologic neoplasia per year. The Reproductive Medicine Center has more than 14,600 visits each year. Nearly 3,000 babies are delivered and approximately 3,500 major and minor gynecologic procedures are performed annually. UMMC is our program’s parent institution, and both hospitals are located on the University of Minnesota campus.

Hennepin County Medical Center http://www.hcmc.org performs nearly 2,800 deliveries and approximately 800 major and minor gynecologic procedures per year. HCMC has a long tradition of resident education in OB/GYN. It provides a diverse urban training experience in the heart of Minneapolis with many Native American, Somali, and African-American patients. For the seventh year in a row, HCMC was listed in the 2004 US News & World Report’s rankings of the top U.S. hospitals in its annual "America's Best Hospitals" report. In 1989, HCMC was the first hospital in Minnesota to be designated a Level I Trauma Center.

Regions Hospital http://www.regionshospital.com formerly St. Paul Ramsey Medical Center, has been a major training site of OB/GYN residents for many years. In fact, before merging with our program in 1999, Regions had its own OB/GYN residency. The Regions faculty remains committed to resident education and residents are the primary care providers for OB/GYN patients. Approximately 2,500 deliveries and over 2,700 major and minor gynecologic procedures are performed each year. Residents experience an urban setting with significant patient populations of Vietnamese, Hmong, and Hispanic patients. Regions’ ER, where first-year residents complete a rotation, is also Level I Trauma Center.

Affiliated Institutions

Abbott Northwestern Hospital (ANW) in Minneapolis provides third year residents comprehensive experience in high-risk obstetrics as well as gynecologic oncology.  Over the past 25 years, the perinatal service at ANW, in collaboration with the immediately adjacent Minneapolis Children’s Hospital, has become one  of the busiest centers in the country with published neonatal outcome statistics that are among the best in the world.  The inpatient and consultation perinatal service is run by maternal-fetal-medicine specialists from Minnesota Perinatal Physicians. A six-week rotation in specialized Gynecologic Oncology is also available for advanced year residents.  During this rotation, residents gain extensive operating-room experience, including radical laparoscopic and advanced robotic-assisted procedures.  ANW and its staff have demonstrated a strong commitment to teaching and clinical research collaboration with the University of  Minnesota.

Methodist Hospital complements the residency program by providing rotations dedicated to specialized elements of the residency experience. The gynecologic surgery rotations at Methodist http://www.parknicollet.com/methodist/ during the third year further develop residents’ surgical skills. More than 3200 major and minor gynecologic surgeries were performed at Methodist from June 2003-June 2004.  Beginning in 2005, our first-year residents also rotate at Methodist for Obstetrics.

In addition, our residents receive an opportunity to pursue a comprehensive educational experience in the discipline of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (Urogynecology).  Currently 6 weeks are dedicated in the 4th year, with planned expansion of this experience in the near future.  Faculty include fellowship trained physicians Dr. Jeffrey Warshaw, who is employed with Hennepin Faculty Associates, and Dr. James Raders, who is in private practice with hospital affiliations at Abbott, Fairview Riverside and North Memorial.  Clinical evaluation, office treatment and follow up is available in the offices of Dr. Raders.  His website link is www.fpmed.org.
