Dr. Kaufman is a Professor, the Elias Potter Lyon  Chair for Research in Ophthalmology, and the Director of Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the University of Minnesota. He is the former Director of Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the Henry Ford Health System, Department of Ophthalmology and faculty member at Wayne State University as well as Case Western Reserve University Medical School. Dr. Kaufman attended Louisiana State University School of Medicine, in New Orleans and completed his residency at Henry Ford Hospital. He trained in LASIK and other refractive procedures, Cornea and External Disease during a 2 year fellowship at the LSU Eye Center. The LSU Eye Center is renowned as the first site in the world to treat a human eye with the excimer laser.

During his career, Dr. Kaufman has performed over 15,000 refractive procedures.

Dr. Kaufman is a VISX and Nidek laser instructor for other physicians, residents and fellows. He has lectured at numerous ophthalmology meetings. He is the editor of a cornea textbook, is on the editorial board of 2 ophthalmic journals, has published 5 chapters on cornea and refractive surgery and has more than 100 publications and presentations to his name. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of several professional organizations including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Cornea Society, the International Society of Refractive Surgeons and the Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
