Dr. Nelson grew up in Duluth, Minnesota.  He graduated with honors in chemistry from the University of Minnesota, Duluth.  Medical school, residency and fellowship training were at the University of Minnesota.   His fellowship was in corneal and external eye disease and nonrefractive corneal surgery.  He has been on the Ophthalmology Clinic Staff at Regions Hospital since 1982.  He served as Director of the Residency Training at that institution from 1982-2000.  He is currently on the attending staff at Regions Hospital and is the Associate Medical Director for Specialty Care in the HealthPartners Medical Group.
