Graduate Medical Education
The Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota is Minnesota's major resource for the training of future ophthalmologists and vision scientists. It is committed to attracting excellent students and to recruiting and retaining outstanding faculty to provide clinical and didactic training for medical students, resident physicians and post-residency fellows in ophthalmology. The Department promotes continuing medical education for practicing ophthalmologist through courses and conferences. It is an active participant in ophthalmic technician training programs and has Minnesota’s only orthoptic training program.
Undergraduate Medical Education
The Department of Ophthalmology is part of the University of Minnesota Medical School. Third and fourth year medical students at the University of Minnesota may enroll through the Medical School Education Office for a 3-week clinical rotation in ophthalmology (OPH 7180). A further course option available to year III/IV medical students is the 6-week ophthalmology research rotation (OPH 7190), during which the medical student works on a project suggested by an ophthalmology M.D. or Ph.D. staff member. The Department furnishes ophthalmology lecturers and offers a 3-hour clinical practicum for the entire Year II U of MN medical school class during their pathophysiology unit.
