Application Information

Dear Fellowship Applicant:

We offer three-year pulmonary/critical care fellowships consisting of 18 clinical months and 18 research months. Training is carried out at the four affiliated hospitals – University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview,  the Minneapolis Veterans Administration Medical Center, Regions Hospital, and Hennepin County Medical Center – to provide fellows with extensive clinical experience in all aspects of pulmonary disease, sleep medicine and critical illness. Fellows are given an opportunity to see and manage patients with all types of respiratory disease on an inpatient and outpatient basis. We also offer training in special procedures related to pulmonary, sleep and critical care medicine, including fiberoptic bronchoscopy, intubation, chest tube placement, Swan-Ganz catheter placement, and sleep studies. Research opportunities are available in cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, basic physiology, critical care medicine, epidemiology, and clinical trials. Our program emphasizes training in basic research with a strong orientation toward preparing fellows for a career in academic medicine.

The University of Minnesota, along with most other pulmonary fellowship programs in the country, has agreed to participate in the matching programs for pulmonary/sleep medicine/critical care fellowships conducted by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). If you have not already done so, please contact the NRMP at:

2009.  We will be filling 4 slots for the 2009/2010 academic year.  Our interview season begins on January 2 and runs through April 30. We require 3 reference letters.  They can be of your choice - we do not require a letter from your residency program director.

We review and consider all applicants, including those of visa holders (J-1 and H-1), and will sponsor a visa for an outstanding candidate.
