Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship

Welcome to the University of Minnesota's
Pulmonary, Sleep Medicine and Critical Care Training Program!

The University of Minnesota offers a combined three-year Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship consisting of 18 clinical and 18 predominantly research months. It is an accredited training program for pulmonary and sleep and critical care medicine. Fellows completing the program will be eligible to sit for all three board examinations. Fellows accepted into fellowship training are funded for 3 years, but also are encouraged to seek research support grants during the second and third years. Fellows receive training at four different sites, including the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview (a tertiary referral hospital), the county hospitals for Hennepin and Ramsey counties, and the Minneapolis Veteran Affairs Medical Center. The Division has 33 faculty members and two instructors who have a broad range of clinical and research interests. Basic science and clinical research projects in the areas of interstitial lung diseases, acute lung injury, lung transplantation, alternative modes of mechanical ventilation, bacterial pneumonia, and chronic obstructive lung disease are currently ongoing among the four different hospitals. The primary goals for the fellows completing the program are:

  • Graduates will be able to diagnose and manage pulmonary
diseases and diseases that occur in the critically ill patient.

  • Graduates will be able to interpret studies and perform pro-
cedures in the areas of pulmonary and critical care medicine.

  • Graduates will be able to identify, develop, and complete
a basic science or clinical research project.
