Faculty Support

It is the philosophy of the faculty that fellows learn best when they are actively involved in patient care or directly performing procedures. Thus, fellows are supervised by faculty while evaluating and managing patients who are critically ill or who have pulmonary diseases and while performing procedures. Most of the direct faculty and fellow interactions occur during daily work rounds in which fellows, residents, and medical students discuss and examine patients in outpatient and inpatient settings. 

It is also the philosophy of the faculty that the second and third years of fellowship training be spent under the close supervision of one faculty member who will be designated his/her mentor. It is the function of the mentor to provide the fellow with the necessary guidance to complete a project in clinical or basic science research. Mentors have daily contact with the fellow and directly assist in the development of a research hypothesis, the development of the appropriate methodology and experimental design to investigate the hypothesis, the collection and interpretation of data, and the preparation of manuscripts to report the findings. Mentors also assist the fellow in the funding process and in the submission of grant proposals.
