Mee Lee Nelson, M.D.

Dr. Mee Lee Nelson

Assistant Professor of Medicine

Background:  Dr. Nelson grew up in Iowa and attended undergraduate school at Grinnell College.  She pursued graduate education at the University of Iowa Medical School, later completing her medicine residency at the University of Minnesota.  She followed this with fellowship training in allergy, asthma, and immunology, also at the University of Minnesota.  She is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Allergy & Immunology.

Clinical Interests:  Dr. Nelson enjoys seeing a broad spectrum of allergic diseases.  She believes in educating her patients on the proper use of their medications and is a strong enforcer of asthma action plans.  Because she is based at the University, her patients have access to the state’s top-rated pulmonary function lab.  She routinely handles difficult hives and angioedema cases.  Dr. Nelson enjoys evaluating and treating all allergic conditions, whether it be atopic dermatitis, food allergies, or seasonal hayfever.

Academic Interests:  Dr. Nelson performed scientific research in chemistry and microbiology during her years as an undergraduate and medical school student. Working in the lab of Agustin Dalmasso, MD, with the collaboration of Malcolm Blumenthal, MD, she investigated the basophil response by complement stimulation in asthmatic patients.  Her studies involved a small group of patients; preliminary results show trends of lower basophil response in the asthmatic group than the control group.   She is now focusing her academic interests on medical education and multi-center clinical trials.  Mee Lee Nelson is currently a part-time Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota.
