Dr. Alter, originally from Ohio, graduated from the Ohio State University with a B.S. in microbiology in 1989 and received his M.D. from Medical College of Ohio (now Medical University of Ohio) in 1994. He spent 1 year of internship training at Metrohealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio before transferring to the University of Minnesota to complete his residency training in 1997. Dr. Alter completed his fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Minnesota in 2000 and spent the following year doing laboratory research at the VA Medical Center.
After 4 years in private practice, he returned to the University of Minnesota in 2005 to pursue his clinical interest in sleep disorders and general pulmonary medicine.
