Lung cancer continues to be the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the US. Despite aggressive therapies currently available, the survival rates remain abysmal: there is only 15% 5-year survival in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The underlying biology of lung cancer tumorigenesis is not fully understood. However there is mounting evidence that enhanced mRNA translation plays a large role in other malignancies and may offer specific points amenable to novel therapeutics. I hope to develop an in vitro model of NSCLC by enhancing translation in concert with specific mutations known to be present in lung cancer. This model would then allow for a more detailed assessment of pathways leading to NSCLC tumorigenesis with the goal of developing improved therapeutic agents.
