Project: Jeffrey’s research was under the auspices of Dr. Marshall Hertz, and Dr. Richard King. Immediately following his training on this grant, he held a postdoctoral research appointment at the University, followed by his current appointment to a research informatics position with Medtronics.
Over the course of his training under this fellowship, he received training in molecular, cellular, developmental biology, genetics and bioinformatics. His research was primarily directed towards gene expression microarray analysis in the area of human lung transplantation. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from lung transplant recipients was collected and a gene expression profile, marked by activation and proliferation markers of T-lymphocytes, was found that identified patients with and without concurrent histologic evidence of acute rejection from biopsy samples (published in 2003 in the Am J Respir Crit Care.) Further work in this area has been submitted as a manuscript to the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. A second area of research was a microarray analysis of a mouse model of acute and chronic lung rejection published in 2005 in the American Journal of Transplantation. During his training he was awarded a Lillehei Predoctoral Fellowship and a University of Minnesota Institute of Human Genetics Fellowship which were used to fund the mouse microarray research.
