Project: Mike’s research focused on the study of multiple myeloma (MM), an incurable form of cancer, characterized by the proliferation of malignant plasma cells (PCs) in the bone marrow. Over the two years of his training, he worked on a project that sought to increase the prevalence of plasma cell neoplasia in the mouse using tissue and developmentally restricted transcriptional regulators to alter expression of anti-apoptotic and oncogenic genes. Together with other researchers, he developed a mouse whose plasma cells were resistant to apoptosis; these mice developed significant plasma cell disease. The hypothesis had been to cross the mouse to a separate group of mice that have altered expression of growth-promoting oncogenes, expecting that these crosses will result in progeny that develop plasma cell tumors. The ultimate goal was to generate a mouse model of multiple myeloma.
