Project:  Dr. Rich’s research examined whether thyroid hormone transporters were present in rat lung and whether their expression was altered during development or by hypo- or hyper-thyroidism.  His results were:  (1) Characterization of six thyroid hormone transporters in rat lung that were not previously described.  (2.)  Determination that specific transporters are regulated by developmental state while other transporters are regulated by thyroidal status. His research used PCR, western blotting immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization to quantitate these transporters and to determine the specific cell types that express them.  He currently is studying lung deiodinases and discovered that they are markedly upregulated with human ARDS, possibly creating a local hypothyroid state.  This research is continuing with Drs. Ingbar, Anderson and Mariash (Director of the Endocrinology Division) along with collaborators in the Beth Israel (Harvard) Endocrine Division.
