Jennifer Smith, PhD

Dr. Jennifer Smith Mentor:  Peter Bitterman, MD and David Ingbar, MD

Research Project:  "The Translational Response of Alveolar
Epithelial Cells to Hypoxia and Hyperoxia"

Specific Aims:
  • To determine the mechanism responsible for the inhibition of translation in alveolar epithelial cells upon acute and chronic exposure to oxygen extremes.
  • To identify translationally active and repressed transcripts during acute and chronic oxygen extremes and determine how the synthesized proteins influence cellular fate.
  • Future work will be focused on examining the mRNAs that are translationally active during stressful oxygen conditions in an attempt to identify regulatory elements leading to their increased association with polyribosomes.
