Project:          Dr. Sprenkle enrolled in the master’s degree program in clinical research through the University of Minnesota School of Public Health.  Over the ensuing 2 years, he completed coursework in epidemiology, biostatistics, and clinical study design and management.  During this time, he initiated a thesis project necessary for completion of his master’s degree.  His principle thesis advisor, Dr. Kristin Nichol, provided access to an existing database regarding health-related quality of life in a population of veterans.  This project provided Dr. Sprenkle with important experience in measures of health status and implementation of multivariate models to determine whether health status is independently predictive of mortality and health care utilization in veterans with obstructive lung disease.  This master’s thesis project was successfully defended and his degree was conferred in 2003.  The results of his project were presented at the American Thoracic Society International Conference and have been submitted for publication.

As a secondary project, Dr. Sprenkle designed and conducted a systematic review.  This qualitative review involves OM-85 BV, an agent used in Europe for prevention of exacerbations in COPD.  This project was performed under the guidance of Dr. Timothy Wilt, an expert in systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
