Project Title: Metabolomic changes associated with chronic lung allograft rejection

Specific Aims:
1) Develop methods to identify small molecules in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid
2) Correlate changes in small molecule concentration profiles with progression of lung allograft rejection

Description:  In contrast to the extensive ongoing work to identify proteins in bronchoaveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and monitor changes in profiles of these proteins in patients over time, very little is known about the low molecular weight constituents of BALF. Using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, we will develop methods suitable for profiling the constituents of BALF that are appropriate for this complex matrix. In parallel we will begin characterizing the low molecular constituents of BALF to gain a better understanding of its chemical composition.
