Behavioral Pediatrics Program
Behavioral pediatricians and fellows provide primary and consultative service through daily outpatient clinics and inpatient consultation for children and adolescents in the University of Minnesota Children's Hospital, Fairview. Services are provided across the pediatric and adolescent age groups for all children including those with developmental disabilities, adjustment and coping with chronic illness, learning and attention disorders, enuresis and encopresis, pain, psychophysiologic disorders, habit problems, anxiety, and stress management.
The educational program is responsible for all first-year pediatric residents training in behavioral pediatrics. Resident and fellowship teaching programs include diverse clinical experiences with components provided by faculty at the Alexander Center for Child Development and Behavior of Park Nicollet Clinic in Eden Prairie, the Sleep Center at HCMC, and the Pediatric Integrative Medicine and Cultural Care Program at Children's Hospitals and Clinics, Minneapolis. Faculty also provide elective rotations for interested junior and senior residents as well as mini-tutorials, community programs, and workshops for practicing clinicians interested in refining their knowledge and skills.
The research program includes studies of self-regulation (self hypnosis) in children; management of Tourette's syndrome with relaxation/mental imagery; uses of biofeedback and hypnosis in management of anxiety disorders and effective management strategies for a variety of psychophysiologic and behavioral problems.
