Shortly after a friend had been diagnosed with cancer, I discovered Care Partners - a special program at University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview that specially trains volunteers to provide diversion activities for patients and breaks for parents.
My friend was in her early twenties, receiving chemotherapy on the Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic at the University of Minnesota and had to go to her treatments alone since her family lived out of state. Touched by her strength and courage, I was inspired to become involved with the young cancer patients who come to the University of Minnesota seeking treatment. I chose to do this as a Care Partners volunteer for pediatric patients staying on the bone marrow transplant unit at the University of Minnesota Medical Center – Fairview. As a Care Partners volunteer, I rocked small infants, read favorite books to the children and offered companionship to these special patients and their worried families. I wanted them to know they were not alone during their difficult journey.
One special memory was being with a mom as she cradled her young son in her lap. This was a precious moment as they comforted each other; filled with love and warmth. I left the hospital that night with a stronger appreciation of family and love.
For three years I worked with these amazing, courageous kids and their families, and inspired by them decided to pursue medical school. I have just completed my final year, and can still remember all the children I met as a Care Partners volunteer. They continue to motivate and strengthen me, and I am eager to discover how these past experiences will shape and guide my role as a future physician.
As a Care Partners volunteer, it was easy to recognize that this program is a valuable resource for patients and families. I was honored to be a part of the program and continue to strongly encourage others to become involved. My experiences have made me realize that the simple joys of friendship, love, and laughter make life beautiful and worth sharing. I am grateful for all the Care Partners’ memories and experiences that continue to touch my heart. Once I have gained more experience as a practicing physician, I will again incorporate volunteering into my life. I began this wonderful journey with Care Partners, and I am excited to discover where it will lead me.
