Fellowship Curriculum

The clinical portion of fellowship consists of 19 months of experience including clinical service (7 months), catheterization (6 months) and echocardiography (6 months). Preparation of a research topic commences during the first year of fellowship. Three months during each of the first two years of training and 11 months during the third fellowship year are reserved for completion of a research project and paper. The call schedule is 1:4 during years 1 and 2 and 1:5 during the 3rd year. Three months of the clinical service months occur in the ICU and will include an in-house call every 4th night. All other call is from home.

Ongoing educational programs for the fellows include the weekly Cardiology-Cardiovascular Surgery Conference, the weekly Fellow's Conference, Pediatric Cardiology Core Lecture series and Combined PICU/NICU/Cardiology Fellows Core Lecture series. The University of Minnesota GME office provides an annual Core Curriculum for graduate Medical Education lecture series covering topics pertinent to all graduate-level Fellows. Other conferences and lecture series are also available to the Fellows specific to their individual areas of interest, such as the Developmental Biology center bi-monthly seminar series. Each hospital site has Pediatric Grand Rounds available to the Pediatric Cardiology Fellow. Participation in Pediatric Cardiology outpatient clinic is required during all three years of the fellowship.
