He is Associate Director of the Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Training Program. He is Chairman of the Pediatric Cardiac Care Consortium. Dr. Kochilas received his M.D. degree from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. He completed his residency in Pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Texas and his fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He is board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology. Dr. Kochilas' clinic interests are management of neonates with critical heart disease, specifically single ventricle phyisology, and diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for cardioprotection in patients with dystrophinopathies. His research interests include the following: 1. Cardiovascular physiology; circulation assist devices (intraventricular balloon pump) and circulatory collapse (role of adhesion molecules). 2. Embryonic cardiac developement (animal models: mouse and zebrafish), including neural crest cell development; cardiac growth, development and adaptation to stress during perinatal transitioning; and, regulation of left-right asymmetry. 3. Clinic and translational research including genetics of cardiac diseases, assessment of the long term effects of CHD and their treatment on the health status and life quality of survivors with repaired or palliated congenital heart defects, and anatomico-physiologic correlates in the HLHS.
