Adjunct & Affiliate Faculty
Welcome from the Chairs of the Adjunct & Affiliate Faculty Committee
The Adjunct & Affiliate Faculty is governed by a committee made up of active adjunct and affiliate faculty members, co-chaired by Dr. Ted Thompson and Dr. John O'Connell.
John O'Connell, M.D. & Ted Thompson, M.D.
The Department of Pediatrics has 350 active adjunct and affiliate faculty who volunteer their time to teach 115 Pediatric and Medicine/Pediatric residents and 800 medical students. This teaching occurs in a wide variety of clinical settings ranging from urban, suburban and rural offices to large teaching hospitals. The teaching experiences include Physician and Patient III, a series of two full-day pediatric outpatient experiences where second year students get their first hands-on experience, the Primary Care Clerkship, where a third or fourth year student spends four days a week with a preceptor seeing patients, and the Resident Continuity Clinic, where residents spend a half-day each week for three years seeing patients. During the first year of Continuity Clinic, the resident will spend almost two months full-time in the preceptor’s office. Urban/Rural resident electives allow senior residents opportunities to get more exposure to these practice settings for one month at a time. Aside from the satisfaction of teaching receptive students, adjunct and affiliate faculty receive numerous benefits and access to University resources. These include a University e-mail account, access to the extensive electronic resources of the Bio-Medical library, which include the current issues of almost all medical and scientific journals, as well as faculty discounts on University sports tickets, gym use, and computer software and hardware. The links from this page include criteria for Adjunct & Affiliate Faculty appointment and promotion, descriptions of all the courses taught by Adjunct & Affiliate Faculty, and to WebCT presentations of University Grand Rounds.
