Anupam Kharbanda, M.D., MS is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Emergency Medicine and a staff physician at the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children's Hospital. In addition, he serves as Research Director for the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
 
Dr. Kharbanda is originally from St Paul; he received his BA in Biology from Carleton College.  He completed his medical education at the University of Iowa College of Medicine. After college, he moved east and completed residency in pediatrics at the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, Columbia University. After residency he served as Chief Resident and then went on to complete his Fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Kharbanda also received a Masters in Biostatistics at Columbia University. Dr. Kharbanda was an attending physician at Columbia University for five years, the largest Children's Hospital in New York and a level one pediatric trauma center. While at Columbia, he served as Director of Clinical Operations for the Pediatric ED working on strategies to improve patient flow, promote patient safety, create clinical pathways, and implement an electronic health record system.
 
Dr. Kharbanda has published numerous articles in the field of pediatric appendicitis. He is nationally recognized for his work on novel urine and serum biomarkers for appendicitis as well as clinical pathways for the management of children with acute abdominal pain. He has written several textbooks chapters on abdominal pain, pediatric appendicitis and pediatric trauma. In addition, he has been invited to present his research on pediatric appendicitis on multiple occasions. He recently completed a large ten center study to develop cost effective strategies to manage children with abdominal pain.

Since joining the Division in July 2010, Dr. Kharbanda has continued his research on biomarkers for appendicitis.  He has also continued clinical outcomes based research and implementation strategies for electronic health records.
