Pediatric Endocrinology Fellows

Melena Bellin
bell0130@umn.edu
Fellowship Period:
08/01/06 - 07/31/09

I grew up in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota where I graduated from Park Center High School in 1995.  I received my bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa in 1999.  I received my M.D. from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 2003 and went on to complete my pediatric residency at the University of Minnesota in 2006.  My interest in endocrinology started during pathophysiology classes in my second year of medical school and was enhanced by my clinical experiences in my pediatric endocrinology rotations during fourth year medical school and residency.  I am excited to be starting my pediatric endocrinology fellowship this year. As part of my fellowship, I will be completing the Masters in Clinical Research Program through the School of Public Health.  My area of research is metabolic function after islet cell transplantation.  My current focus is on outcome after autologous islet cell transplantation in patients who have undergone pancreatectomy for chronic pancreatitis.

Fellowship Period:
08/01/05 - 07/31/08

I am from the Twin Cities area, having attended Macalester College and the University of Minnesota for my undergraduate education and moving on to Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York for medical school.  I returned to the University of Minnesota for Pediatric Residency, following which I entered the University's Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship Program.  As part of this program, my clinical research is focused on endocrinopathies in the pediatric bone marrow transplantation population.

Betsy Rosenberg Schwartz, M.D.
rose0124@umn.edu
Fellowship Period:
08/01/04 - 07/31/07

I grew up in St. Paul and graduated from St. Paul Academy in 1991. I went to Smith College in Northampton, MA where I majored in studio art, did pre-med coursework, and participated on the downhill ski team. I then spent a year painting in the post-baccalaureate studio art program at Brandeis University. I went to medical school here at the University of Minnesota and during my fourth year did a pediatric endocrinology rotation which sparked my interest.

I am currently a third year pediatrics resident at the University of Minnesota. This year I had the opportunity to write a chapter on insulin resistance during puberty with Dr. Toni Moran which will be published in a text next year. I look forward to starting my fellowship and will be doing research on childhood obesity and its relationship to insulin resistance and C-reactive protein levels.
