Director, Professor Phone: (612) 624-5409 Fax: (612) 626-5262 moran001@umn.edu Professor Antoinette Moran, MD is Division Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at the University of Minnesota. Her research has been continuously funded since 1987. She leads an international multi-center trial of diabetes therapy to improve muscle mass in cystic fibrosis patients, and she has conducted extensive metabolic studies of protein, lipid and carbohydrate turnover in patients with cystic fibrosis with and without diabetes, in order to assess the effects of insulin deficiency and insulin resistance on intermediary energy and substrate utilization. Her work in cystic fibrosis related diabetes recently resulted in her being named the first annual recipient of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Richard C. Talamo Distinguished Clinical Achievement Award, for “research contributions that have had significant influence on the course of the disease". Dr. Moran is a principal investigator for the TrialNet diabetes prevention study, and as part of that network is participating in several trials to prevent or ameliorate new onset type 1 diabetes. In her role as Director of the Metabolic Core of the Islet Transplant Program, she directs the assessment of metabolic endpoints to improve the efficacy of islet transplantation for type 1 diabetes. Dr. Moran has served as research mentor for multiple undergraduates, medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty. Recently, her clinical and research efforts have taken her to Kampala, Uganda, where she is working with local health care workers to establish a pediatric diabetes program.
