Specimen Collection Instructions

INSTRUCTIONS FOR URINE COLLECTION

Please choose one of the methods described below to collect three urine samples (3-4 hours apart), using the enclosed filter papers. After the samples are collected, seal the filter papers in the plastic bag, place the bag and "Data Sheet" in the return envelope, and mail.

For Infants

Contamination of the filter paper by stool may affect this test. It may be best to obtain samples before your child has been fed. We hope to get three samples from your child, but if one or more of the papers has become soiled with stool, include only those free of contamination.

Contamination of the filter sample by diaper cremes, oils, or powders can also affect this test. Please avoid using these products when collecting samples.

METHOD 1:

Obtain a wet diaper from your child. Lay the diaper on a flat surface (plastic side down, if disposable). Remove the uppermost "liner" if present. Place a filter paper on a wet, unsoiled area. Fold the diaper to cover the filter and press firmly until the filter paper is thoroughly wet. Remove the filter paper and allow the filter paper to dry overnight on plastic wrap. Using a pencil, label one corner of each filter paper with name, time, and date the sample was collected.

METHOD 2:

Place filter paper inside the child's diaper. Be sure to put the filter paper in the folds of the diaper where it is not likely to be stained by the child's stool or cause chafing. The child can wet directly onto the filter paper. Remove the filter paper and allow the filter paper to dry overnight on plastic wrap. Using a pencil, label one corner of each filter paper with name, time, and date the sample was collected.

For Older Children/Adults

METHOD 3:

Collect a urine sample in a clean, convenient container. Lightly dampen the filter paper with urine (do not soak; approximately 1 teaspoon is enough). Allow the filter paper to dry overnight on plastic wrap. Using a pencil, label one of the corners of each filter paper with name, time, and date the sample was collected.
