KIHC
Kids Into Health Careers (KIHC) is a program for young people of color who are interested in science and are curious about the possibility of a career in health care. Did you know?
Of all the nurses, doctors, dentists in the United States, less than 10% are: - African American
- American Indian or
- Hispanic
KIHC is about exploring health care careers – that means if you are in the program, you get: - A paid summer internship – that you could keep for 3 years!
- A University mentor knowledgeable in your area of
- interest.
- Access and introductions to all the different health care training programs at the U.
- The opportunity to plan, work on and complete your own health care project – great for college applications!
- The possibility of earning extra credits for high school.
- Real world experience in a formal health care setting with health care professionals.
How do I apply? (The program is full for this year) Students of color entering either 9th, 10th or 11th grade may apply. The application process will involve: - A written application,
- including an essay
- An interview
- Letters of recommendation from a teacher or youth worker and from a parent or guardian.
Do I have to know exactly what career I want to have? No! In fact, KIHC might help you figure that out. What you do need is: - A good school record (grades and attendance)
- Motivation and dependability
- A willingness to work hard
- Curiosity about the future that you might have in health care!
Next Year: If you stay with the program through a second and third summer your internship grows too! The summer session increases to 6-8 weeks in length, and the stipend increases by $500 each year!
