Iris Borowsky, M.D., Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of General Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota. She received her undergraduate degree at Duke University, and her Ph.D. in Neuroscience and M.D. from Washington University School of Medicine. Her pediatric internship and residency were at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where she also completed a fellowship in General Academic Pediatrics, with an emphasis on children and adolescents living in high-risk environments.
Much of Borowsky's clinical and teaching activities are at the Community University Health Care Center, a neighborhood-based outreach clinic of the University of Minnesota which provides care to an ethnically-diverse, low income urban population. Her research has focused on risk and protective factors for involvement in self-directed and interpersonal violence among youth, as well as the development of effective violence prevention strategies, particularly interventions that can be used by health care providers in clinical encounters. She completed the Generalist Physician Faculty Scholars Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Currently, she is working with a national network of pediatric practices involved in research, the American Academy of Pediatricsø PROS (Pediatric Research in Office Settings) to implement and evaluate a primary care-based intervention to identify, prevent and treat psychosocial problems among youth. Dr. Borowsky has mentored several graduate and undergraduate students in research and writing projects, and serves as faculty mentor and advisor to medical students, pediatric residents, and fellows in General Pediatrics and Adolescent Health. She directs the Primary Care Fellowship in General Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota.
