Dr. Dan Kohen is the Director of the Developmental/Behavioral Pediatrics Program and Clinical Director of the KDWB University Pediatrics Family Center. He is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and has a joint appointment as Professor in the Department of Family Practice & Community Health. Dr. Kohen is Board Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and by the American Board of Medical Hypnosis.

Dr. Kohen has been on the Faculty of the Department of Pediatrics for 30 years, helped to found and develop the Behavioral Pediatrics Program, then at Children's Hospital, Minneapolis, and has been at the University for 16 years.   He sees patients daily in the Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics Program's general DBP clinic and self-regulation clinic.  He is the Director of, and a major teacher in, the Resident Rotation training program in Developmental/Behavioral Pediatrics (one month in PL-1 year), and also directs and teaches the 3-year, ACGME accredited Fellowship Training Program in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics.  

Dr. Kohen's research interests include exploration of cyberphysiologic (self-regulatory) abilities in children and adolescents with headaches, Tourette Syndrome, children with sleep disorders, and in the ability of children to learn and utilize self-hypnosis to alter and regulate physiologic functions. He recently completed a study of 178 consecutive children and adolescents with headaches treated with self-hypnosis training. (see June, 2007 below) Dr. Kohen teaches clinical hypnosis skills workshops throughout the United States and around the world and his efforts and publications also focus on best practices in clinical hypnosis education and training. He has over 50 publications in a variety of pediatric, hypnosis, and other scientific journals.

Teaching Activities

Dr. Kohen was invited to teach a 2-day Introductory Workshop and 1-day Intermediate Workshop “Clinical Hypnosis with Children and Adolescents” for the Dutch Hypnosis Society in Amsterdam, March 23-24, 2007. Over 75 clinicians participated in the Workshops.

Dr. Kohen taught a 2-day invitational workshop “Hypnosis with Children and Adolescents” for the “M.E.G. - Kinderhypnose” (Milton Erickson Gesellschaft – Society) May 11-12, 2007 in Berlin and a 3-day “Pediatric Hypnosis Intensive-The State of the Art” May 17-19, 2007 in Rottweil, GERMANY.

Dr. Kohen presented an invitational Advanced Pediatric Hypnosis Workshop on “Teaching Children/Adolescents Self-Hypnosis for Managing Chronic and Recurrent Pain” (with Dr. Karen Olness) at the

Dr. Kohen presented the paper “Chronic Daily Headache: Helping Adolescents Help Themselves with Self-Hypnosis” to the Scientific Program of the XVIII Congress of the International Society of Hypnosis.

Dr. Kohen will teach multiple presentations to the Introductory/Intermediate/and Advanced Pediatric Hypnosis Workshops at the Annual Meeting of the Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics in Portland, OR  October 1-3, 2009.

Dr. Kohen will teach an invited 2-day Pediatric Hypnosis Workshop to the Ericksonian Hypnosis Society of Krefeld, GERMANY on October 26-27.

He will also teach 3@3 hour workshops at the 6th European Congress on Child Hypnosis in Heidelberg, GERMANY October 28-November 1, 2009:  Hypnotherapeutic Approaches to Helping Children with Disorders of Elimination (Enuresis, Encopresis), Self-Hypnosis Training for  Habit Problems in Children and Adolescents,
and Hypnosis for Asthma in Children and Adolescents
