Star Center for Family Health

KDWB Star fact

Did you know that eating disorders are not due to a failure of will or behavior, but are real, treatable medical/psychological illnesses in which maladaptive patterns of eating take on a life of their own.

The STAR Center (Services for Teenagers At Risk) Adolescent Eating Disorder and Weight Management program offers an inter-disciplinary outpatient program for adolescents and young adults with eating disorders and weight management issues. The STAR Center includes individual therapy, medical and nutrition therapy, and family therapy to address the complex biological and psychological issues related to eating in adolescents and young adults.

Based on a belief that an effective outpatient program uses an inter-disciplinary approach, our services inlcude:

  • Patient assessment
  • Outpatient treatment program to address the medical, emotional, social and behavioral issues
  • Consultation with health professionals
  • Didactic seminars

We treat adolescents and young adults (females and males), ages 12-25, with Anorexia, Bulimia, Disordered Eating and who are struggling with their weight. We also provide psychological and nutrition evaluations for adolescents who are bariatric surgery candidates.

For Prospective Patients:

Prior to your first visit to the STAR Center, you will complete a phone screen to assess whether we can be a helpful resource. Upon your first visit, all patients (and their parents if they are 18 or younger) will meet with psychology, medicine, nutrition and family therapy. After we have completed our assessment, we will give you feedback as to whether 1) the patient has an eating disorder or weight management issue, 2) whether they are appropriate for the STAR outpatient treatment program, and 3) treatment specifics and schedule.
