Clinical Care
The Global Pediatrics Program's primary clinical service is the International Adoption Clinic, a component of the International Adoption Medicine Program.
The International Adoption Clinic provides specialized, consultative care to children who were adopted from other countries. Our development program, designed based on our findings in more than 20 years of research in the health and medical issues of international adoptees (IA), is a series of four visits to international adoption medicine specialists at 2-3 weeks post-arrival, and then again at 6, 12 and 24-months post-arrival. We've learned that, with close monitoring during those first two years post-arrival, it is possible to catch more of the issues common to post-institutionalized children before those issues develop into larger problems later in the child's life.
The Clinic has seen more than 4000 IA children since its inception in 1986. Our provider list has grown to include an experienced team of physicians, occupational and physical therapists and pediatric clinical psychologists. Within the University of Minnesota Children's Hospital, Fairview, we refer and collaborate broadly with experts in infectious diseases, speech/language pathology, audiology, fetal alcohol issues, genetics, endocrinology and neuropsychology.
