Dr. Kumar is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics. He earned his M.B., B.S. (medical degree) from Lokmanya Tilak Medical College, Bombay University, in Bombay, India. He then earned his PhD in Anatomy and Cell Biology from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA before completing residency training in Pediatrics at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Dr. Kumar joins the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Blood and Marrow Transplantation after completing his fellowship training in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Blood and Marrow Transplantation at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Kumar was awarded the William Kennedy Research Fellowship in Childhood Cancer from the National Childhood Cancer Foundation. His research focuses on understanding the biology of infant-leukemia. This type of leukemia is caused by mutations in the MLL gene and is also seen in adults as a complication of chemotherapy for other cancers. Dr. Kumar is a member of the University of Minnesota Cancer Center and currently provides care for children with malignancies in the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Blood and Marrow Transplantation.
