Dr. Mulrooney is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Blood and Marrow Transplantation in the Department of Pediatrics. He received his bachelor's degree in biology from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. After teaching for 2 years as a United States Peace Corps Volunteer, Dr. Mulrooney attended the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago, where he received his M.D. degree in 1997. Following medical school he completed a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology both at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Mulrooney also holds a Master's degree in Clinical Research from the University's School of Public Health.

In addition to the care of children, Dr. Mulrooney is particularly interested in adolescent and young adult oncology. His research has concentrated on the late effects experienced by survivors of childhood malignancies, and he is directing the University's Long-Term Follow-up Clinic for cancer survivors. Dr. Mulrooney has been involved with the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study and investigated fatigue and sleep disorders in these cancer survivors. Dr. Mulrooney is also the co-chair of the Endocrine/Metabolic Task Force for the Long-Term Follow-up Guidelines of the Children's Oncology Group Late Effects Committee.
