Dr. Mulrooney is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Blood and Marrow Transplantation in the Department of Pediatrics. He received his bachelor's degree in biology from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. After teaching for 2 years as a United States Peace Corps Volunteer, Dr. Mulrooney attended the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago, where he received his M.D. degree in 1997. Following medical school he completed a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology both at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Mulrooney also holds a Master's degree in Clinical Research from the University's School of Public Health.
In addition to the care of children, Dr. Mulrooney is particularly interested in adolescent and young adult oncology. His research is concentrated on the cardiovascular late effects experienced by survivors of childhood malignancies, and he is the Medical Director of the Long-Term Follow-up Clinic for cancer survivors at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Mulrooney is actively involved in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study and has investigated cardiac outcomes, fatigue and sleep disorders in these cancer survivors. Dr. Mulrooney is also the co-chair of the Endocrine/Metabolic Task Force for the Long-Term Follow-up Guidelines of the Children's Oncology Group Late Effects Committee.
