In the News:
Dr. Paul Orchard treated a 22 month old child with Tay-Sachs disease (a rare metabolic disease) with an innovative blood transplant that attempted to replace the patient’s blood-producing cells with normal, health cells thanks to new therapies that are hoped to be less toxic than those in the past.
First systemic therapy for fatal childhood disease performed: Researchers at the University of Minnesota recently performed the first bone marrow and cord blood transplant to treat an 18-month-old boy with a rare and fatal condition, recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa. The disease causes skin to slough off with little movement or friction.
Researchers develop method that allows more cancer patients to receive blood transplants: By using a less toxic dose of chemotherapy and radiation in combination with umbilical cord blood that requires a less stringent match, University researchers were able to offer a transplant to people who previously did not qualify for transplantation either because of age, extensive prior therapy before transplant, organ dysfunction, or lack of a matched donor. The research, led by Claudio Brunstein, M.D., appears in the Oct. 15 issue of Blood, the premier journal of the American Society of Hematology.
Research Shows Cord Blood Comparable to Matched Bone Marrow: In this study, investigators compared outcomes of pediatric leukemia patients who received unrelated bone marrow transplants with those who received umbilical cord transplants. While all bone marrow donors were matched, nearly all cord blood donors were mismatched.
The research appears in the June 9, 2007, issue of The Lancet with John E. Wagner, M.D., professor of Pediatrics and director of the University of Minnesota Medical School’s division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation, as senior investigator.
U of M Doctors Uncover Treatment for Advanced ALD Patients Continuing with more than a decade of research, doctors at the University of Minnesota have discovered a treatment to help with patients with advanced cases of adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), a rare disorder affecting the nerves. The results are published in the late February 2007 issue of Bone Marrow Transplantation.
