Child Mental Health

EARLY TRAUMA: IMPACT ON CHILD MENTAL HEALTH Children who were adopted are likely to have experienced various kinds of trauma or other adversity early in their lives. Such trauma may have included exposure to violence, food insecurity, medical trauma, multiple losses (of parents, siblings or other caregivers), natural disaster, neglect, orphanage care, physical abuse, sexual abuse, traumatic grief, war zone trauma - or some combination of these factors. Our research tells us that the earlier we can intervene for the traumatized child, the easier it will be to detect and treat problems. The research-based treatment program we have developed was supported by a fellowship grant from Zero To Three. THE PROGRAM Two visits. The first is a 2-hour initial intake visit to review history, observe the child's behavior, and make a plan. The intake is followed by a separate 2-hour developmental assessment, where the focus is the child's ability to function in and form relationships with others. Children and families who need additional help will receive additional interventions as necessary. Appropriate for any age child. Typically requires at least one clinic visit to the International Adoption Clinic for health assessment.
