PRE-ADOPTION Medical Reviews - $500-650/review Online through our secure submission system, with additional option to speak with the adoption medicine physician by phone. We review child's growth, development, infectious disease status, social and medical history, birth parents' social and medical history (if available), and evaluate for signs of alcohol or other prenatal exposures. Upload referral Disease Consultations - $250/hr By phone or in person. You may have received a list from your agency of common conditions and diagnoses and asked to choose which of these you are willing to accept in your child referral. We can consult with you to go through this list of conditions and diagnoses, to let you know the potential long-term consequences and give you an idea what kind of resources are likely to be required in parenting a child with that condition. Request Travel Consultations - $250/hr For parents who are planning to travel to pick up their newly adopted child. Request General Consultations - $250/hr For parents still deciding what country to adopt from and what types of medical issues they are prepared to parent. Request 10-day Waiver Letter - $150/per letter For parents adopting from Russia. You will receive two original copies of the letter stating a medical necessity for expediting your child's release, signed by our adoption medicine staff and notarized. Request Donate | Preadoption FAQ | Traveler FAQ | Technology FAQ POST-ADOPTION Clinic Visits Recommended within 2-3 weeks of arrival in the U.S., but we will see your child at any time. Initial visit typically includes physical examination, initial development status, laboratory evaluation, and time to address your questions about your child’s adjustment to her/his new environment - we will work with your primary care provider to provide the best care. Child Mental Health Assesses learning skills, language/communication skills and development of attachment relationship (for 5 years old and younger). Tests all realms of cognitive function, including learning, memory, decision making, problem solving (for 6 years old and older). We also offer family therapy for issues related to your family and child's adjustment to the new environment.

OUR OTHER WORK Research The study of children who were institutionalized or who experienced other early adversity provides researchers with a unique opportunity to examine the effects of a major intervention (adoption) on the child's physical growth, and social emotional and cognitive development. Education As part of a university teaching hospital, IAC faculty teach residents in the University of Minnesota Pediatric Residency as part of a four-week elective experience. As part of a land-grant academic university, we are committed to conducting research that advances the science of adoption medicine and provides this information in a readily understandable format for the non-medical mind. Advocacy Concurrent to starting a clinic for children fortunate enough to be adopted, co-founder Dana Johnson also started a tradition of orphan advocacy in the early 1980s.
