2010

Cindy Howard, M.D., was quoted in Lisa Buck's story, "Finding A 'Forever Family' in Minnesota", published on Minnetonka Patch, an online community-specific news and information platform, in February 2010.

Judith K. Eckerle, M.D., presented "Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: The Real Deal, Imitators, and What Lies Ahead" as part of a 2010 Minnesota Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (MOFAS) FASD training; Dec 13, 2010.

Maria Kroupina, Ph.D., presented a poster "A Mental Health Program for Newly Arrived Internationally Adopted Infants and Toddlers" at the Zero To Three 25th National Training Institute Dec 8-11, 2010.

Judith K. Eckerle, M.D., is now certified as a trainer in the field of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). The certificate recognizes successful completion of a comprehensive "train the trainer" program to help health and human service professionals effectively identify, refer and provide services for individuals and families affected by prenatal alcohol exposure. Learn more about this program, sponsored by UW-Madison's Continuing Studies Department Professional Development and Applied Studies.

Maria Kroupina chaired the symposium "Transition from early adversity: Post-institutionalized and internationally adopted children: examples from four longitudinal studies" at the 12th Congress of the World Association on Infant Mental Health; Leipzig, Germany, June/July 2010. She also presented the paper, "Adoption as an intervention for institutionally-reared children: risk factors for cognitive development trajectory."

Also at the Congress, Dana Johnson presented the paper, "Growth and relations between auxology, caregiving environment and cognition in institutionalized children".

Maria Kroupina will give a talk this Saturday, July 17, to addresses mental health issues for parents of children who were adopted from Haiti post-earthquake. Cindy Howard also recently visited Haiti.

Dana Johnson was quoted in the June 28 edition of Time in an article "When the Adopted Can't Adapt"His article "Growth and associations between auxology, caregiving environment, and cognition in socially deprived Romanian children randomized to foster vs. ongoing institutional care." was published in the June issue of Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine.

Judith K. Eckerle has presented in April and will present again in July several parts of a University of Minnesota series on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders for Minnesota Association for Children's Mental Health.

Dana Johnson appeared on National Public Radio's Weekend Edition with Jacki Lyden April 25, 2010.

Dana Johnson provided a medical perspective and insight into the intercountry adoption relationship with Russia on the Minnesota Public Radio Midmorning program, hosted by Kerri Miller; Monday, April 19, 9 - 10am.   

Dana Johnson was first author on an article published in April 2010 in Archives of Pediatric and Academic Medicine. The article is "Growth and Associations Between Auxology, Caregiving Environment, and Cognition in Socially Deprived Romanian Children Randomized to Foster vs Ongoing Institutional Care".

Judith K. Eckerle and Dana Johnson presented talks at Joint Council for International Children's Services annual conference in March 2010. Beth Andrews attended the conference to provide education on our pre- and post-adoption clinic services.

2009

Pi Nian Chang provided online training content on FASD for a Minnesota Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (MOFAS) - University of Minnesota Medical Center partnership targeted for healthcare providers. CME credit is available through Aug 31, 2010. More info and a link to the training are on the MOFAS website. 

Judith K. Eckerle's abstract on FASD facial features and cognitive outcomes was accepted by American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Adoption and Foster Care.  

Maria Kroupina was awarded a fellowship in the prestigious ZERO TO THREE leadership and policymaker program. Only 26 fellows are selected from a national applicant pool. Dr. Kroupina will be a fellow from 2009-2011. Key topics in the program include brain development, child absue and neglect, and social emotional development.

Dana Johnson appeared on the radio program Creating a Family. He spoke with host Dawn Davenport about how to we evaluate referral information for "red flags". Listen to the story here


2008

Maria Kroupina, along with the rest of her two research team, was selected to deliver two symposia at the biennial Society for Research in Child Development in April 2009. The symposia are "Concurrent and Long-Term Effects of Iron Deficiency Without Anemia on Neurobehavioral Development in High Risk Populations" and "Improvements in Early Care Environments: Effects on the Neurobiology of Stress in Populations of High Risk Children". Dana Johnson is a co-investigator on the latter of these.

Maria Kroupina was invited to present a paper, "A high risk population of post-institutionalized children: early adversity, social relatedness, stress sensitive system, and developmental outcomes" at the bi-ennial International Society for the Study of Behavioral Development Biennial Meeting; Wurzberg, Germany. October 2008.

Mary Chesney, Ph.D., M.S., R.N., a dedicated member of the International Adoption Medicine Program since 1997, left the IAMP to pursue a career as teaching faculty in School of Nursing. August 2008

Dana Johnson was quoted in the Mar 15 2008 issue of People Magazine.


2007

Cynthia R. Howard became director of International Adoption Clinic, taking over for Dana Johnson after his 20-year tenure as founder and director. Fall 2007

Judith K. Eckerle was awarded a three-year (2007-2010) research fellowship in Center For Neurobehavioral Development. Her research will be mentored by Dana Johnson. July 2007


2006

Dana Johnson was awarded the Holt Outstanding Service Award in 2006, for his lifelong commitment to improving the health and status of orphans worldwide.

Stacene Maroushek and the Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) are featured on PBS/TPT's  RX for Child Survival: Closer to Home: A pediatric clinic is visited, a documentary on the life and health of immigrant children.  January 28, 2006
