The Eastern European Growth Project

The University of Minnesota is currently conducting a research project that closely monitors the growth and development of children during their first six months home.  We invite families who are planning to adopt, or have recently adopted, from Eastern Europe to participate in this project.

About the Project
Our research staff is currently seeking children who will arrive in the United States from Eastern Europe after April of 2004.  Parents will be required to bring their child to an initial visit within three weeks of the child's arrival, and another at six months.  Two saliva samples will need to be collected at home one month and six months after the initial appointment.

The project provides testing beyond the normal International Adoption Clinic visit, and the research grant will cover the costs of these additional tests.  You or your insurance provider will need to cover the cost of the routine portion of the examination.  (Please contact your insurance provider if you are unsure of your coverage.)

Benefits
Spaces will be made available for study participants so that they can be seen within three weeks of arrival.  This is a much shorter wait than normal (which can be months).  Parents will also have the opportunity to learn much more about the health status of their child than if they made the normal, single visit to the clinic.

Contact
Families interested in learning more about this project can contact the IAC Director of Research, Dr. Maria Kroupina, via e-mail (kroup003@umn.edu) or by telephone at 612-624-6609.

You can also send the International Adoption Clinic an e-mail (iac@umn.edu) with the following information:

  • Parents' names
  • Approximate arrival date of your child
  • The country of the child's origin
  • Best telephone numbers and times to call (home, cellular, work, etc.)
A staff member will contact you to schedule an appointment.
