NICU Follow-up Clinic

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, or NICU, Follow-up Clinic specializes in monitoring the growth and development of babies who have needed NICU care. Although most of our babies do quite well in the long run, we have found that early treatment and referral of babies with potential problems ensures that each child has the best chance for normal growth and development. The Clinic also provides education and support to families who use these services.

Clinic is held two to three Friday afternoons each month in the Pediatric Specialty Clinic in the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, located on the 4th floor of the Phillips-Wangensteen Building on the University of Minnesota's Minneapolis East Bank medical complex.  Please call 612-626-6777 for directions.

The Clinic Visit

Four regular visits to the clinic are scheduled at key times in your baby's development. The first visit is at four months corrected age (four months after your original due date if your baby was premature).  At this visit the medical team will review your baby's growth and development. An occupational therapist will perform a developmental exam, assessing your child's muscle tone to detect any problems that may interfere with his or her development.

At the ages of one and two years adjusted for prematurity, your child will receive a developmental assessment by a child psychologist.  This assessment examines the development of fine and gross motor skills, play skills and early language skills.  The medical team will also ask you some additional questions about your child's speech and language abilities. At four years of age your child will have a detailed preschool assessment performed by a child psychologist.

At each of these visits, the medical team may make specific suggestions regarding your child's care. A summary letter of the visit will be mailed to you and to your health care provider. Occasionally, if we have specific concerns regarding your child, we may schedule him or her for an additional visit.

Fees
NICU Follow-up Clinic visits are reimbursed by many insurance providers.  Please check with your provider regarding coverage before your visit.  If you belong to a health maintenance organization or insurance company that requires pre-authorization, this is particularly important.  The referral must state the name of the physician your baby will be seeing.
